Experience sampling for iPhone

Most of us are only half here.

Three times a day, at a random moment, Mindwhere asks two quick questions: what are you doing, and was your mind on it? After a few weeks, you'll see where your attention really goes.

See how it works

No account. Nothing leaves your phone.

Mindwhere's check-in asking “Was your mind on it?”, with four answers: yes, right here; no, somewhere pleasant; somewhere neutral; somewhere unpleasant.

How it works

Two taps, three times a day

  1. Quick check-in

    now

What are you doing right now, and is your mind on it?

    Mindwhere
    1

A ping at a random moment

Three a day inside your waking hours, at least 90 minutes apart. Random timing is the point: it catches you as you are, not when you remember to check.

    • Yes, right here
    • No, somewhere pleasant
    • No, somewhere neutral
    • No, somewhere unpleasant
    2

    Two quick answers

What you're doing, and whether your mind was on it. If it wasn't, was it somewhere pleasant, neutral or unpleasant? A few seconds, then back to your day.

  2. 3

    Your pattern, over weeks

See how often your mind was on what you were doing, how that changes over time, and where it goes during each activity.

Try it

This is the whole check-in

Two taps, then back to your day. Try one now, the way a ping would ask you.

Check-in · Now

What are you doing?

Just a demo. Nothing is saved or sent.

Where does it go?

Not just whether you drift. Where to.

A focus timer can tell you whether you stayed on task. Mindwhere also asks where your mind went instead, and splits every activity into four colours. Maybe work drifts somewhere pleasant, and the commute somewhere worse. Now you'll know.

Here
Your mind was on what you were doing.
Pleasant
Somewhere nicer: plans, daydreams, good memories.
Neutral
Somewhere else, neither good nor bad.
Unpleasant
Worries, replays, things you'd rather not think about.
Presence by activity: Working 50% here, Commuting 20%, Eating 33%, Screens 17%, Reading 75%, Talking 67%, Chores 33%, Exercising 100%, each bar split into here, pleasant, neutral and unpleasant.

The science

Built on a landmark study

46.9%

of the time, people's minds were somewhere other than what they were doing.

  • Minds wandered at least 30% of the time during every activity but one.

  • Drifting somewhere pleasant didn't make people happier than staying on task.

  • What people were thinking predicted their happiness better than what they were doing.

Killingsworth & Gilbert, “A Wandering Mind Is an Unhappy Mind”, Science, 2010. 2,250 adults answered random pings on their iPhones.

How Mindwhere uses the method
Mindwhere's Home screen: “Good morning, Maya. A check-in is waiting.”, three random moments today, an Answer now button and an on-task share of 43%.

Calm by design

A mirror, not a coach

  • Everything stays on your iPhone

No account, no cloud, no analytics. Your check-ins never leave your phone.

  • No streaks, no guilt

Miss a ping and nothing happens. There's nothing to protect and nothing to lose.

  • Honest numbers

Your share is a plain count of your own answers, with the method explained.

  • English and Ukrainian

Fully translated, right down to the notifications.

Questions

How many notifications will I get?

Three a day, at random moments inside a waking window you set (9:00 to 21:00 by default), at least 90 minutes apart.

What if I miss one?

Nothing. A ping stays open for an hour, then quietly expires. There are no streaks to break.

Do I need an account?

No. Open the app, tell it what to call you, and you're set.

Where is my data stored?

Only on your iPhone. Mindwhere has no servers, no analytics and no ads, and you can erase everything from Settings. See the privacy policy.

Is this a meditation app?

No. Mindwhere doesn't try to change you. It shows where your attention goes, so you can decide what, if anything, to do about it.

Is it a medical tool?

No. It's for self-reflection, and it doesn't diagnose or treat anything.

How much does it cost?

Mindwhere starts with a 14-day free trial of everything. After that, Premium is a yearly or monthly subscription, and the app shows the price in your currency before you commit. Without Premium, pings, check-ins and your last 7 days stay free.

How do I cancel?

In your iPhone's Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions, then Mindwhere Premium. Cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends and you won't be charged. You can also get there from Mindwhere's Settings.

Which iPhones does it work on?

iPhones running iOS 26 or later.

When can I get it?

Mindwhere is coming soon to the App Store.

Where's your mind right now?

Find out, three moments at a time.
